95-year old Chicago bank remodelled into world-class art center

Serving as a community savings and loan bank in the 1920s, the building on Chicago’s South Side recently found itself in the hands of Chicago’s artist, urban planner, and builder extraordinaire Theaster Gates. After saving the building from demolishment, Gates turned to his own Rebuild Foundation to remodel it into an arts center.
The Stony Island Arts Bank now houses Frankie Knuckles’ vinyl archives, and over 60,000 glass lantern slides from the University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute.
